If the client is running on a Mac then there are skins like XBMC. In other words, the GUI's for xbmc, Boxee and Plex and way ahead of most things out there. Boxee is a different approach though the GUI would be along the same lines. It's really a tossup between Plex and XBMC for Mini owners. The original aTV Flash is also being reduced to 39.95. Once the final version is ready for release the price will return to the normal level of 29.95. aTV Flash (black) will be available at the discounted discounted price of 19.95 during the beta (pre-order) phase.

If you have a PC then run the Media server there and the client on an iDevice or Android device or Roku. Update 2: The Windows version of aTV Flash (black) is now available. If you have a Mac then you can just try both the Plex Media server and client on the same Mac. It is organized in a different way though. You have internet channels with Plex, similar to the addons for XBMC. Local and internet content are not as intertwined. My opinion is the XBMC player is more stable but the Plex server+ client is more flexible and is prettier. I prefer the scraping for the Plex Server, but XBMC's is also really good. Scraping is done via imdb for the Plex server. Plex just seems friendlier to everyone here at home, but XBMC is a more stable client in dealing with accessing the newer Minis' video hardware.

On my Mac Mini HTPC I have both Plex and XBMC ( Dharma).

I find the Plex approach more stable there. XBMC on the ATV2 would have to decode the files on that platform. So on my ATV2 I can play most files as though they were local. There are Android, iDevice, Mac, LG and now Roku clients.ĭepending on the client platform the file is either transcoded or streamed directly (no transcoding) from the Plex Media Server to the client. and then there is the client which plays files on wherever you have it installed. The Plex Media Server which goes about collecting metadata and serving out internet channels such as Netflix, Hulu, etc. I use it on my Linux ATV1 with a CrystalHD card and it is very stable. They also took out the file management functions of xbmc and moved to a database library approach. It branched off to become Plex in order to make it more Mac like.
